Many successful small business owners have at least one thing in common — the ability to see the big picture and envision what their success will look like tomorrow. There are many potential avenues for achieving growth, and each business needs to assess its own model and determine its own path. Here are six strategies worth considering.
1. Picture Where You're Going
You will not get there if you cannot see where you are going. Everyone in the organisation should hold a clear, shared picture of where the company will be after it heads in a strategic direction. A vision that lives only in the founder's head is not a strategy — it is a hope.
2. Work Together
No company heads in the right strategic direction without genuine teamwork. The salesperson should be in sync with the marketing person, who is working in tandem with the CEO, who shares ideas with the financial officer. Ideally, the entire team understands the goals and shares the vision for how the business is moving forward.
3. Evaluate Where You Are
Every once in a while, stop and evaluate how the strategic management process is going. Develop a checklist of important, measurable aspects of your business and review them regularly. That does not mean constantly revising goals — if you are changing the plan frequently, you may not have nailed the focus of the business or the vision for the future.
4. Strive for Excellence in Everything You Do
From answering phones to handling collections, every task can be improved to give your client that "wow" feeling. Excellence is not reserved for the big moments — it is built in the small ones, consistently, over time.
5. Inspire, Develop, and Lead by Example
Your employees are vital to your success — and payroll is also the highest cost in a company. Inspire your employees to be their best, motivate them, and help them grow. Provide continuing education and development. The quality of your team is the quality of your business.
6. Build Your Social Media Presence Strategically
Social media is certainly a powerful tool for growth. But you need a real audience for your efforts to have impact. Build your presence with genuine value — not just promotional content. The more you are willing to stretch and challenge yourself, the more you have to gain over the long term.
Creating a plan for growth — whether in the form of long- and short-term goals, a business plan, or even single targeted tasks — can help your business reach new levels of success. The plan is not the destination. But without one, you are unlikely to arrive.
